Portable fuel quality conditioning unit on short term hire

Oil Tank Supplies service division, TankCare Ltd, has introduced a drop-and-go hire service to support fuel storage tank service teams, who require a short term solution for reconditioning contaminated wetstock.

The quality of fuel left standing for emergency power generators and other contingency machinery and plant will deteriorate over time. For assured reliability therefore, the fuel stock should be lifted and refreshed at regular intervals. This is a fairly straightforward process which involves pumping the stock out of the tank and recirculating it through a series of filters to remove dirt particles and any water content.

In addition to providing a sterile filtration unit, OTS will deliver all the associated accessories, such as the hoses and power supplies required to support its operation on location. On completion of the task, OTS will collect the unit and dispose the all the waste materials including the used filtration cartridges.

If required, TankCare has the facilities to provide full back up service support, starting with fuel sampling and analysis. Reports can be provided before and after completion of the tank cleansing procedure.

For bigger jobs TankCare will undertake an attended visit, providing a service technician as well as a mobile fuel treatment unit, equipped with full test and analysis facilities. There is also an option to lift the entire wetstock contents for processing offsite, using an approved fuel oil recycling tanker.

In addition to test,  and fuel quality reconditioning, TankCare will also be happy to offer a full tank cleansing service in collaboration with your site maintenance department.

TankCare’s quality sampling kit allows distributors to undertake interim tests

Fuel Quality Test Sampling KitOTS TankCare is marketing a sampling kit containing sterile sample bottles, test guides and all the equipment required to enable fuel distributors and customers to carry out their own quality checks on deliveries and out- going fuel stocks, as and whenever they choose.

It is intended that the kits would be used in conjunction with a planned maintenance programme. The main advantage is that full service tests can be scheduled more efficiently, reducing costs and enabling the client to set up a quality control procedure according to site specific requirements.

“Normally we recommend full service testing for Derv and Gas Oil tanks on a quarterly basis,“ explains TankCare operations manager, Darrin Francis. “For clients who are prepared to undertake their own interim tests we can offer an alternative Tier 2 service.”

The fuel quality test kit includes a filter patch which is used to capture a visual indication of the level of contamination within the sample. A client opting for the Tier 2 service will start with a full service test to set the baseline. The test results are entered onto a website database. As interim readings are logged, the client will be able to observe trends and any anomalies. The results are then validated by a follow up full service test on a six monthly cycle. Clients can choose to test as many times as they like with the benefit of building up more accurate results at the start and finish.

The fuel quality test sampling kit:
Designed to cover requirements for two fuel grades, each kit contains six sterile sample bottles, a syringe and one micron filter patch for visual indication of the levels of contamination. Other items include gloves, a spill matt, and instructions.

All the components are secured in a rugged polycarbonate holder together with hi-resolution images for use in comparison of what clean fuel should look like as a guide. Also included is a pre-addressed ‘postal’ container for returning the samples to the TankCare, test laboratory. Alternatively, arrangements can be made for the samples to be collected by a courier service. Samples will be analysed within 24 hours and the results logged and reported back to client.

Setting standards for Oil Storage

FPS StandOil Tank Supplies (OTS) of Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestshire will be showcasing a mobile fuel quality test laboratory at the forthcoming FPS Expo 2012.

The emphasis this year will be tank maintenance and fuel quality monitoring. Video presentations will highlight the company’s design and build capability. Recent projects include fuel oil distribution centres, several large scale fuelling facilities for transport operations and a harbour installation for fuelling sea going ferries.

OTS has also supplied its first BioTank, which has been installed for a national distribution chain specialising in chilled produce. Basically a standard diesel storage tank, the BioTank is fitted with a conditioning pack designed to prevent the build up of microbial contamination. Effectively this is a self cleansing capability to preserve the pristine quality of the wet-stock - as delivered from the refinery.

“We are expecting a lot of interest in the area of fuel cleansing and treatment procedures for bio fuels,” says OTS sales director Steve Gain.
“The move towards higher percentage biofuel contents has necessitated more stringent hygiene in oil storage facilities. Water contamination can very quickly lead to the rapid deterioration in fuel quality.”

A demonstration of diesel filtration will be centre piece of the OTS stand at the FPS show. This will be supported by specialists from the TankCare Division to discuss the need for fuel quality monitoring and tank hygiene.

  2. Hall 1 for OTS TankCare – fuel cleansing and quality monitoring.

Oil Tank Supplies (OTS) of Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestshire has increased its participation at the forthcoming LAMMA farm machinery show. In addition to the presentation of fuel oil storage solutions in the outside area, the company has taken a stand within Hall 1 for OTS TankCare a specialist division providing fuel test and quality monitoring solutions.

“Having adequate fuel supplies available is an important part of the logistics behind the modern farm, sales OTS sales director Steve Gain. “Storage facilities need to be secure, convenient and compliant with environmental regulations. Large capacity tanks are usually customised and OTS personnel will be available to discuss customer requirements.”

On display will be the Oil Transit Store – a portable tank which will hold 970 litres. The tank incorporates slots for loading onto a trailer for easier access to field operations. The tank is equipped with a 12 volt electric pump enabling it to be powered from the tractor electrics.

The move towards higher percentage biofuel contents has necessitated more stringent hygiene in oil storage facilities. Water contamination can very quickly lead to the rapid deterioration in fuel quality. Tanks should be drained when equipment is not in use and operators should avoid holding fuel stocks any longer than necessary to complete foreseeable operations.

OTS TankCare is a mobile service equipped to test fuel quality and provide fuel cleansing by recirculation of the tank contents through a filtration process. If fuel quality is in doubt, this process will safeguard productivity by removing contamination and any bacterial growth, which could potentially lead to machinery breakdowns.

FPS Show Report

FPS StandInterest in the new TankCare service and the newly launched BioTank with UV Technology at the FPS Show was very high. We had three major fuel supplying companies requesting site visits. This, along with a substantial number of tank enquiries made this one of the best shows we have attended recently.

Needless to say, we have booked our place for FPS 2012, where we will be exhibiting with a full vehicle space stand (13m x 3m), just inside the main entrance, where our TankCare vehicle and our BioTank will be on full display.

We hope to see you there!

OTS BioTank first with integral ‘self-cleaning’ system

Bio TankFuel oil today has an increased proportion of biodiesel which in turn has a higher amount of suspended water, making it prone to microbial growth. If untreated this will give rise to problems with clogged filters and deteriorating fuel efficiencies and poor emissions.

“In farm machinery for example, equipment can be used intensively during seasonal activities such as harvesting and then laid up over winter. Another area of concern would be standing fuel reserves for emergency generators.”

“The problems will be exacerbated in situations where fuel usage tends to be irregular,” explains Steve Gain, Sales Director of the Gloucestershire based, Oil Tank Supplies.

“In farm machinery for example, equipment can be used intensively during seasonal activities such as harvesting and then laid up over winter. Another area of concern would be standing fuel reserves for emergency generators or gas interruption contracts.”

Oil Tank Supplies has designed the “BioTank” to provide effective long term storage of fuel oils. A first in the industry, the OTS “BioTank” uses innovative technology to dewater and cleanse the fuel while also preventing the build up of microbial contamination.

“Basically this is an active fuel storage system,” adds Steve Gain. The tank incorporates pipework and an integral pump which re-circulates the wetstock periodically through a series of filters and an Ultra Violet treatment, which kills off the bacteria. In operation this process can be set for a predetermined time period dependant on tank capacity.

Although this is a first for the fuel oil industry, this solution is based on mature technology already being used successfully in the food and drink related industries.”

For existing installations, the tank pack is also available as a retrofit solution which can be fitted as part of the OTS TankCare services.

* Editors’ notes: Industry leaders such as OFTEC, ICOM and Federation of Petroleum Suppliers are advising installers and service engineers that by 1st January 2011 – or even sooner – Class D gas oil supplied in Great Britain could contain up to 7 percent of FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) – the most common type of biodiesel.

OTS Launches TankCare Service

TankcareOTS TankCare is key to planned preventative maintenance for gas-oil storage facilities.

Fixed price service covers sampling, analysis and inspection of fuel-oil storage tanks.

The introduction of new fuel specifications with traditional red diesel being replaced by ultra-low sulphur gas oil presents a number of challenges to users in agriculture, transport and logistics sectors.* For the new fuel has an increased proportion of biodiesel content which makes it very needy in terms of tank hygiene. More care will also be required with layup procedures for plant and machinery not in regular use.

Responding to the needs of its customers, Oil Tank Supplies of Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire, has launched OTS Tankcare, a support service equipped to provide technical advice and carry out preventative maintenance for fuel-oil storage facilities.

“The basic service comprises a site visit and inspection of the client’s storage tank,” explains OTS support manager, Darrin Francis. “This covers fuel sampling, analysis and a tank status report for a fixed fee of £85 plus VAT.”
“Depending on the findings the OTS Tankcare report will recommend follow up actions and advice for immediate remedial action, together with a cost proposal for an on-going OTS Tankcare planned preventative maintenance (PPM) service agreement.

“Depending on the findings the OTS Tankcare report will recommend follow up actions and advice for immediate remedial action, together with a cost proposal for an on-going OTS Tankcare planned preventative maintenance service agreement.”

There is no obligation to use OTS and ‘clients’ can simply implement our recommendations by using their own resources or pass these over to their existing service support providers.” says Darrin Francis.

“We are recommending that existing storage tanks are inspected and if required, cleaned thoroughly in readiness for the new specification biofuels. This gas-oil is less tolerant of tank contamination and it has hydroscopic properties, which means it will absorb and release water as ambient environmental conditions change. Water will then encourage the growth of bio materials that can clog filters.”

“The consequences of this will show up as dispensing pumps become slower and in a worst case scenario contamination of the fuel which can lead to breakdowns and loss of productivity.

“Regular maintenance is essential. As well as checking that oil storage tanks are free of water, service engineers should also make sure that oil line ancillary equipment on gas oil installations such as filters and valves are biodiesel compatible. Flexible oil lines and fuel pumps should also be checked for biodiesel compatibility, and upgraded if necessary.

The OTS TankCare total PPM service covers inspection, tank scrub and de-contamination service. As well as expertise OTS is certified for the removal of waste and all operations are carried out on the client’s premises and without any disruption to normal site operations.
