Self Cleaning Fuel Tanks

Self Cleaning Tanks

OTS first developed their bottom sparge pipe cleaning system over 10 years ago, albeit sparge pipes have been around for nearly 100 years, when they recognised that the new fuels were going to include a percentage of Biofuel (FAME), which is hygroscopic, so any water/condensation in the tank would go into suspension and could encourage bacterial growth and corrosion problems. Also the modern Health and Safety requirements were making manned entry tank cleaning very difficult and costly coupled with the Hazardous Waste disposal costs involved.

OTS as an industry leader has yet again improved its “Self-Cleaning” fuel tanks to include Fuel Filtration to meet the “Best Practice” requirements of the new Standby Generator – British Standard BS 5410 Part 3. This updated model incorporates a SAE J1488 2010_10 Certified Fuel Filtration solution and this system should now be the benchmark for all “Critical Generator” installations. We have decided to make our design technology available to the industry as a whole so that operators of “Standby Generators” can see what they should be specifying and to ensure a level playing field across our industry and make operators aware of the Filtration Certification, SAE J1488 2010_10 that their filter systems should have. The design principle allows for “retro” fitting to existing tank installations and to new tank builds.

OTS also developed the MultiServ™ “Modular Filling Station”, which is fully patented and is the industry leader, which also incorporates the self-cleaning/fuel filtration technology.

OTS is constantly innovating and improving its products and designs with our storage tanks meeting the highest Standards in the UK including OFS T/200 for bunded tanks. As part of this innovation OTS have further developed an automated dosing system that takes advantage of the NOx reducing benefits some fuel additives bring to bear. The combined “self-clean” system above with automated fuel additive dosing ensures “Optimised” fuel on demand. This total solution can only help improve air quality for our inner cities.

OTS Storage Tanks are designed and manufactured to give a minimum 20-year life expectancy – Does your present tank supplier give you this?

Biodiesel Tank

BioTank – The Long-term BioDiesel storage solution with integral fuel cleansing system

The BioTank system incorporates filtration and continuous fuel cleansing to prevent build up of microbial contamination.

Fuel oil today has an increased proportion of biodiesel which in turn has a higher amount of suspended water, making it prone to microbial growth. If untreated this will give rise to problems with clogged filters and deteriorating fuel efficiencies and poor emissions.

These problems will be exacerbated in situations where fuel usage tends to be irregular. In farm machinery for example, equipment can be used intensively during seasonal activities such as harvesting and then laid up over winter. Another area of concern would be standing fuel reserves for emergency generators or gas interruption contracts.

The OTS ‘BioTank’ uses innovative technology to dewater and cleanse the fuel while also preventing the build up of microbial contamination. The design incorporates pipework and an integral pump which re-circulates the wetstock periodically through a series of filters and an Ultra Violet treatment process which kills off the bacteria.

Bio tank

The operational cycle is preset according to tank capacity. Although a first in the fuel oil supply sector, this is mature technology that is already being used successfully in the food and drink related industries.

For existing installations, the tank pack is also available as a retrofit solution which can be fitted as part of TankCare’s services.

BioTank features include:

  • Specifically designed for use with Biofuels.
  • Capacities ranging from 1,000L up to 200,000L, modular with multiple compartments.
  • Fully compliant and manufactured to latest Environmental Guidelines.
  • Fully Automated Filtration System designed to remove water and heavy particulates.
  • Integrated UV treatment system to control microbial fuel contamination (can be fitted as retro kit to existing storage systems).
  • Remote monitoring of storage systems.

DieselPure box

OTS TankCare set to drive UK fuel cleanliness levels to new high following sole distribution agreement with world-leading Filtration Manufacturer, DieselPure.

DieselPure Systems have been designed, tested and certified to the latest and most stringent standard, SAE: J1488_201010, this is the latest iteration and sets the standard for filtration media. DieselPure attained a 100% efficiency rating for the removal of emulsified water when testing ULSD and Jet Fuel. It is this standard that OTS sees as the “go to” standard for UK and Europe and one we recommend for strategic fuel tanks providing critical system backup for Data Centres, Banks, Emergency Services, MOD, Hospitals where reliance on fuel quality is paramount.

Emulsified Water

ULSD(B7) and Biodiesel blends mandated in the last few years have caused new problems within the industry. These blends are hydroscopic Biodiesel being able to absorb 40 times more emulsified water than diesel.

  • Biodiesel could have 1500+ ppm water, under EN 14214:2009 and BS EN 590 the permissible allowable water content is  200ppm.
  • Emulsified water leads to faster decay and formation of solids in fuel, explosive microbial growth and potential acidification of the fuel supply.
  • Most users and filter manufacturers are not yet aware of the full impact potential and the corrosive effect to key components within the tank and downstream pipe work.
  • Traditional filters do not work (Uptime Report)

We are now seeing signs of advanced corrosion within storage tanks and downstream equipment, this in part is due to changes in fuel types and water ingress via “delivered in fuel” in suspension, free standing and possible condensation.

Before ULSD and biodiesel, Microbial contamination or more commonly known as “diesel bug” promulgates on the sludge/water interface and can double in size every 20 minutes.

With ULSD and biodiesel, the increase in emulsified water permits microbial growth everywhere in the volume of the fuel, leading to explosive microbial growth, the downstream effect is “filter plugging” and possible secretion of acetic acid, hence the signs of rapid corrosion.

Our mantra is “remove the water, remove the problem”. Dry the fuel, remove emulsified water and remove free standing water, our systems are tested and certified to SAE: J1488_201010 and attained 100% efficiency rating.

Environmental Impact

DieselPure removes the risks of corrosion to tanks, pipes and gensets, and the related business risks of business continuance in case of emergency.

Provide secondary filter, SmartSponge, an enzyme based filter, that cleans the oily water so the cleaned water can be disposed down the drain, no longer hazmat, no need to store, truck away, and dispose of water.

  • Rejuvenates and sustains fuel indefinitely
  • Cleans tanks of sludge, particulates and microbial growth
  • Removes unlimited amounts of water, emulsified and free standing, drying the fuel, preventing acetic acid formation
  • Improves fuel efficiency and reduces exhaust emission
  • Prevents acid production and corrosion in tanks, pipes and engines
  • Fuel never has to be disposed or wasted
  • The extracted oily water is processed through SmartSponge™
